Austrian Airlines CEO Annette Mann has stated that the aviation sector continues to face significant, long-term supply chain disruptions. These issues primarily involve delays in aircraft deliveries and shortages of essential parts and engines, which are projected to affect operational planning through at least 2028. Despite these challenges, Austrian Airlines has managed to avoid reducing its capacity by implementing robust contingency plans, leveraging fleet flexibility, and receiving support from the broader Lufthansa Group.
For freight forwarders and air cargo operations managers, this ongoing disruption signals potential instability in air cargo capacity and schedules. While Austrian Airlines has mitigated its own capacity cuts, broader industry-wide delays in new aircraft and engine availability could lead to tighter capacity on certain lanes or increased reliance on older aircraft. This situation might also result in higher maintenance-related diversions or delays, impacting the reliability of air cargo services and potentially influencing air freight rates due to constrained supply.
