The SD AISEMAHT, recognized as the world's first dual-fuel methanol escort and rescue tug, has been granted full class certification by ABS. Constructed by Sanmar Shipyards for KOTUG Canada, this vessel is based on the RAsalvor 4400-DFM design by Robert Allan Ltd. The 44-meter tug is one of two new-generation vessels dedicated to supporting Canada's Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP). Its primary role will be to escort tankers safely from the Port of Vancouver into the open Pacific Ocean.
This certification represents a notable achievement for both Sanmar Shipyards and the broader maritime sector, highlighting progress in adopting alternative fuels for vessel operations. The use of methanol as a marine fuel is a key step towards reducing emissions and enhancing environmental sustainability in shipping.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the deployment of such vessels, particularly in escorting tankers, signifies a growing trend towards greener maritime logistics. While not directly impacting container rates or capacity, it contributes to the overall decarbonization efforts within the supply chain, which may eventually influence carrier choices and regulatory compliance for shippers. It also underscores the increasing availability and reliability of infrastructure for alternative fuels, which could support future vessel designs and port services.
The successful certification and operational deployment of the SD AISEMAHT are expected to pave the way for more methanol-powered vessels in the global fleet, particularly in specialized roles like tug and escort services. This development aligns with broader industry goals for reducing the carbon footprint of shipping operations.
