Hapag-Lloyd has announced the implementation of a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for shipments originating in the Far East and destined for North Europe and the Mediterranean region. This surcharge will take effect on June 8, 2026, and will remain in place indefinitely. The PSS applies to all container equipment, encompassing 20-foot and 40-foot dry containers, reefer containers, special containers, and high-cube equipment.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this development signifies an increase in operational costs for cargo moving on these key trade lanes. The introduction of a PSS typically reflects heightened demand and potentially tighter capacity during specific periods. Forwarders should factor this additional cost into their pricing and budgeting for upcoming shipments from Asia to Europe and the Mediterranean, and communicate these changes to their clients to avoid unexpected expenses. This could lead to adjustments in freight rates and potentially influence routing decisions for time-sensitive or cost-sensitive cargo.
