The Brazilian Portland Cement Association (ABCP) has called upon the country's cement manufacturers to accelerate the transition away from imported petroleum coke towards alternative fuels. This strategic shift is deemed crucial for two primary reasons: to lessen the industry's susceptibility to international energy market fluctuations and to meet urgent decarbonization targets. Currently, a significant portion, around 80%, of the petroleum coke utilized by Brazilian cement producers is sourced from abroad.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, a shift in Brazil's cement industry fuel sourcing could lead to several impacts. Reduced reliance on imported petcoke would likely decrease demand for bulk shipping of this commodity into Brazilian ports. Conversely, it could spur increased domestic logistics for alternative fuels, potentially boosting demand for road or rail transport within Brazil. Forwarders handling industrial commodities to Brazil should monitor this trend for potential changes in cargo volumes and types.
