DHL Express has entered into a significant 10-year agreement with SAF One Bahrain for the provision of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This deal, set to commence in 2028, will see SAF One Bahrain supply 250,000 tonnes of SAF to DHL Express over its duration. The partnership is a crucial step towards DHL's ambitious environmental goals, specifically its target to elevate the proportion of sustainable aviation fuel in its total fuel consumption to 30%.
This agreement underscores the growing trend within the logistics and aviation sectors to reduce carbon emissions and invest in more sustainable operational practices. SAF, produced from renewable sources, offers a significant reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. Such long-term commitments are vital for scaling up SAF production and making it more accessible and cost-effective for the industry.
For freight forwarders and shippers utilizing DHL Express's air cargo services, this development signals a continued commitment to greener logistics solutions. While the immediate impact on air freight rates or capacity is not specified, the increased adoption of SAF could contribute to potential future surcharges related to sustainability initiatives. It also offers forwarders an option to meet their own clients' demands for more environmentally friendly supply chains, potentially through carbon reporting or green freight programs offered by carriers like DHL.
This long-term supply contract is expected to provide stability for DHL's SAF procurement strategy, helping the company to systematically work towards its 2030 sustainability targets.
