The European Waterborne Technology Platform (TP) has announced the finalization of its comprehensive Technology Roadmaps. These roadmaps are intended to steer research and development (R&D) efforts throughout the innovation pipeline, aligning with the broader objectives of the European Union's Industrial Maritime Strategy and Ports Strategy.
The initiative encompasses nine distinct Technology Roadmaps, each addressing a specific segment of the European waterborne sector. These include inland waterway transport, ferries, short sea shipping, the cruise industry, offshore vessels, port ecosystems, the blue economy, maritime technology, and ocean-going shipping. The completion of these roadmaps has been met with positive reception from industry stakeholders.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, these roadmaps signal a long-term strategic direction for European maritime infrastructure and vessel development. While not immediately impacting rates or capacity, they indicate future investments in greener technologies, more efficient port operations, and potentially new vessel types or routing options. Forwarders should monitor these developments as they could influence future supply chain resilience, sustainability requirements, and operational costs, particularly for intra-European and short-sea movements, as well as port-centric logistics.
