Gate terminal in Rotterdam has officially commissioned its fourth liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank. This new tank adds 180,000 cubic meters of LNG storage capacity to the facility. The decision to construct this additional tank was made in response to the 2022 energy crisis, with the final investment decision for the expansion taken in 2023.
This expansion significantly increases Gate terminal's regasification capacity by 4 billion cubic meters per year, bringing the total annual capacity to 20 billion cubic meters. Furthermore, bunkering operations at Jetty 4 are projected to begin in 2028, enhancing the terminal's capabilities for LNG fuel supply.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signals increased stability and availability of LNG as a marine fuel in a key European hub. The enhanced regasification capacity could contribute to more reliable energy supply for industrial users, potentially impacting energy costs and, indirectly, operational expenses for logistics providers. The future bunkering operations will offer more options for LNG-powered vessels, supporting the transition to cleaner shipping fuels and potentially influencing vessel routing and scheduling decisions for carriers utilizing LNG.
