The Portuguese government has officially selected Lufthansa to acquire a minority share in its national airline, TAP Air Portugal. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro confirmed the decision, noting that Lufthansa's bid of 1.2 billion euros was preferred over an offer submitted by Air France-KLM. This move signals a strategic consolidation within the European airline industry.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, while this news primarily concerns passenger aviation, it could indirectly influence air cargo capacity and routing options in the long term. As airlines integrate and optimize their networks, there might be adjustments to belly cargo availability on routes served by TAP, potentially affecting capacity and rates for air freight moving through Portugal. Any network changes or fleet modernizations resulting from this partnership could create new opportunities or challenges for air cargo operations.
