CLPe, in collaboration with CNOOC (Shenzhen) International Marine Clean Energy Co., recently completed Hong Kong's first ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering operation. The event, which took place on September 26th at Western Anchorage No. 3, involved fueling the 7,000 car equivalent unit (CEU) vessel, AICC Fenghuang, with approximately 2,600 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG). CNOOC's bunker vessel, Haiyang Shiyou 301, performed the six-hour operation.
This development signifies a notable advancement for Hong Kong's maritime sector in supporting cleaner marine fuels. The successful execution of this STS bunkering demonstrates the port's growing capability to serve LNG-powered vessels, aligning with global efforts to reduce shipping emissions.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this milestone indicates an expanding network of LNG bunkering options in Asia. As more carriers invest in LNG-fueled vessels, the availability of bunkering services in key ports like Hong Kong can influence routing decisions and potentially impact vessel turnaround times. It supports the broader trend towards sustainable shipping, which may lead to new compliance requirements or preferences for greener supply chain solutions.
This initial operation paves the way for future LNG bunkering services in Hong Kong, potentially attracting more LNG-powered vessels to the port and further integrating the region into the global green shipping infrastructure.
