Ocean Network Express (ONE) has introduced an ad-hoc extra loader vessel to enhance capacity on the trade route connecting India to the US East Coast. This deployment is expected to provide an additional 1,000 TEUs of space for cargo originating from India, directly addressing the significant space constraints that have recently affected shippers and forwarders.
The decision to add this extra capacity comes after ONE's recent termination of its West India North America (WIN) service loop, which previously served this critical trade lane. The discontinuation of the WIN service had exacerbated existing capacity shortages, leading to increased pressure on available vessel space and potential cargo rollovers.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this extra loader offers immediate relief by providing much-needed capacity, which could help clear any accumulated cargo backlogs. The additional space is crucial for maintaining supply chain fluidity and mitigating delays for shipments moving from India to the US East Coast. While a temporary solution, it signals a proactive effort by ONE to stabilize service levels on a high-demand route.
It remains to be seen if this extra loader is a one-off deployment or if further ad-hoc vessels will be introduced to support the trade lane's capacity needs in the longer term.
