Asia LNG Transport, a collaborative entity formed by Japan's NYK and Malaysia's MISC Berhad, has finalized a long-term time-charter contract. The agreement is with Malaysia LNG for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, which will feature a dual-fuel diesel electric (DFDE) engine. Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China is tasked with constructing this vessel, which will have a capacity of 18,700 cubic meters.
This development underscores the continued investment in LNG as a marine fuel and for energy transportation. The vessel's dual-fuel capability highlights a trend towards more environmentally conscious shipping solutions, aligning with industry efforts to reduce emissions.
For freight forwarders and shippers, while this specific vessel is for LNG transport, the broader trend of newbuild orders for dual-fuel ships indicates a shift in carrier fleets. This could eventually lead to more sustainable shipping options and potentially influence bunker fuel availability and pricing for other vessel types in the long term. The deployment of such specialized carriers ensures stable energy supply chains, which indirectly supports overall trade stability.
The new LNG carrier is expected to be delivered in 2028 and will be primarily utilized for LNG transportation services destined for Japan, reinforcing energy supply routes to the region.
