The global diesel market is currently under significant strain, with prices resuming an upward trend after a slight decrease from late September's record highs. The Netherlands is particularly affected, reporting an average diesel price of €2.53 per liter, making it one of the most expensive countries for fuel within the European Union.
This situation poses considerable challenges for freight forwarders and road transport operators. Higher fuel costs directly translate to increased operational expenses, which will likely be passed on to shippers through surcharges. The International Road Transport Union (IRU) warns that this tightness in the diesel supply is not a short-term issue, projecting that shortages could extend well into 2027. This prolonged scarcity could lead to further price volatility and potential disruptions to road freight schedules and capacity across Europe.
Forwarders should anticipate continued elevated road freight rates and potential delays due to fuel availability issues. Strategic planning for fuel procurement and exploring alternative transport modes or optimized routing may become increasingly critical to mitigate the impact on supply chains.
