Maersk has begun its first scheduled drydocking in India, as the container ship Maersk Chattogram entered a maintenance program at Larsen & Toubro's Kattupalli Shipyard. This initiative marks a significant step in the partnership between Maersk and Indian shipyards, aiming to enhance local ship repair capabilities and strengthen technical collaboration within India's growing maritime industry.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signifies a potential increase in regional vessel maintenance options, which could contribute to improved schedule reliability for vessels operating in and around the Indian subcontinent. Utilizing local drydocking facilities might also reduce transit times for vessels needing repairs, as they would not need to travel to more distant shipyards. This could lead to more predictable vessel availability and potentially mitigate some operational risks associated with maintenance cycles.
This move aligns with broader efforts to localize supply chain services and reduce reliance on a few major global hubs for essential maritime operations. As India continues to invest in its shipbuilding and repair infrastructure, such partnerships are expected to become more common, offering diversified options for global carriers.
