Belgian state-owned rail freight operator Lineas has announced the takeover of Area 7 within the Port of Antwerp. This strategic acquisition substantially increases Lineas's operational capacity for single wagonload services, giving the company control over more than 70% of the port's infrastructure dedicated to this specific rail freight segment.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signifies enhanced rail connectivity and potentially improved efficiency for cargo moving through the Port of Antwerp, particularly for shipments that utilize single wagonload services. Increased control by a single operator like Lineas could lead to more streamlined processes, better slot availability, and potentially more competitive pricing for rail-based last-mile or first-mile logistics within the port area. It may also reduce complexity for forwarders managing diverse cargo types requiring flexible rail solutions.
This expansion is expected to bolster the Port of Antwerp's overall intermodal capabilities, strengthening its position as a key European logistics hub by integrating rail more deeply into its cargo handling infrastructure.
