Gruber Logistics has initiated the use of a hydrogen fuel-cell heavy-duty truck for freight operations within Milan Malpensa Airport's Cargo City. This vehicle is actively transporting goods for BCUBE AIR CARGO and ALHA, marking a significant step beyond isolated trials. The project, backed by SEA Milan Airports and Edison, aims to seamlessly integrate hydrogen technology into daily airport logistics and digital management systems.
This deployment is not merely a showcase but a practical evaluation of hydrogen truck capabilities within a real-world, demanding operational environment. It signifies a move towards sustainable logistics solutions in the air cargo sector, focusing on reducing emissions from ground operations at major transport hubs.
For freight forwarders and logistics managers, this development indicates a growing trend towards greener supply chain options, particularly for first and last-mile operations around air cargo facilities. While direct impact on air freight rates or capacity is minimal, it signals increasing pressure for carriers and logistics providers to adopt sustainable practices, potentially influencing future tender requirements or partnerships. It also highlights the ongoing investment in alternative fuels for road transport, which could eventually lead to a more environmentally friendly and potentially more stable fuel cost structure for ground handling.
The trial's success could pave the way for wider adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles in airport logistics across Europe, contributing to decarbonization goals for the entire supply chain.
