Jan De Nul's new extra-large cable-laying vessel (CLV), the Fleeming Jenkin, has begun its sea trials. This marks a significant step in its deployment for offshore projects. A second identical vessel, named William Thomson, is anticipated to commence its own trials in the near future.
Jan De Nul initially ordered the Fleeming Jenkin from China's CMHI Haimen shipyard in October 2023. The order for its twin, William Thomson, was placed in May of the following year, indicating a strategic expansion of the company's subsea cable installation capabilities.
For freight forwarders and project cargo specialists, the introduction of these new, larger cable-laying vessels signifies increased capacity and potentially more efficient execution of offshore wind farm projects. This could lead to improved timelines for large-scale energy infrastructure developments requiring extensive subsea cabling. The expanded fleet may also offer greater flexibility in project scheduling and routing, potentially easing pressure on existing specialized vessel availability.
