The International Green Shipping Corridor Alliance was officially launched this week during the Global Sustainable Transport Forum held in Beijing. This new collaborative effort unites 45 companies from 12 different countries, representing the shipping, port, and energy sectors, with a shared goal of advancing sustainable transport solutions.
Key founding members of the Alliance include the Global Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge Centre, a Chinese think tank, along with prominent industry players such as COSCO SHIPPING Group, CMA CGM Group, China Energy Engineering Group, and Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG). The Alliance also convened its inaugural general assembly in Beijing, where China's former Vice Minister of Transport, Fu Xuyin, was appointed as its first chairman.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the establishment of this alliance signals a growing commitment to decarbonization within the global maritime supply chain. While immediate operational impacts may be limited, this initiative could lead to the development of more green shipping corridors, potentially influencing future routing, fuel choices, and associated costs. Forwarders should monitor the Alliance's progress for insights into emerging sustainable shipping routes and technologies, which may eventually affect compliance requirements and the availability of eco-friendly transport options.
