Planned U.S. sanctions targeting Iran, coupled with the United Arab Emirates' decision to halt trade with Tehran, are expected to significantly impede Indian exports of various commodities. Indian exporters have indicated that vital goods such as rice, tea, and pharmaceuticals, which have traditionally been routed through the port of Dubai, will face severe disruption.
This development creates a complex challenge for freight forwarders and shippers involved in the India-Iran trade lane. The established transit route through Dubai, which has served as a crucial intermediary, is now compromised. Forwarders will need to identify alternative, potentially more costly and time-consuming, routes or modes of transport to maintain supply chains. This could lead to increased transit times, higher freight rates due to rerouting and additional compliance requirements, and a need for enhanced due diligence on all parties involved to avoid sanctions violations. Capacity on alternative routes may also become constrained, further impacting logistics planning and execution.
