Sunoco Marine, a division of Sunoco LP, has announced a new commercial collaboration with Verde Marine Energy B.V. (VME). This partnership aims to broaden Sunoco's bunker fuel supply network into key European markets, specifically the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region and the United Kingdom. The agreement combines Sunoco's established commercial reach across North America and the Caribbean with VME's operational infrastructure and physical bunker supply capabilities in Northern Europe. VME is supported by Vertom BV, a maritime service provider and shipping conglomerate.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this expansion signifies increased options for bunker fuel procurement in the critical ARA and UK markets. While not directly impacting freight rates or capacity, enhanced competition and supply reliability in bunkering can contribute to more stable operational costs for carriers, which may indirectly influence shipping prices over time. This development could also offer more diverse sourcing for vessels operating on transatlantic or intra-European routes, potentially improving scheduling flexibility and reducing bunkering-related delays.
