Maersk has announced the implementation of a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) of $1,500 per dry container for cargo originating from five key South Asian markets destined for Saudi Arabia and Jordan. This new charge will take effect on August 15. Notably, the surcharge will not be applied to SPOT bookings, which are typically immediate, non-contractual rates.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this development means an increase in shipping costs for standard dry container movements on these specific trade lanes. Forwarders will need to factor this additional cost into their quotes and consider whether utilizing Maersk's SPOT booking option, where available, could offer a cost advantage for certain shipments. The exclusion of SPOT bookings might lead to a shift in booking patterns as clients seek to avoid the PSS, potentially increasing demand for immediate rate options.
