German shipping company Leonhardt & Blumberg is integrating VentoFoils, developed by the Dutch company Econowind, onto four of its new general cargo vessels. The initial installation has been completed on the HANSA DREJOE at Royal Niestern Sander. Econowind's analysis suggests that these wind-assisted propulsion systems can provide an additional 10% propulsive force, which is expected to result in a significant decrease in both fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
This move aligns with the broader industry trend towards decarbonization and the adoption of greener shipping technologies. By leveraging wind power, the vessels aim to improve operational efficiency and reduce their environmental footprint, contributing to sustainability goals within the maritime sector.
