Kenya Airways is actively pursuing a significant expansion in its air cargo division, with plans to lease a Boeing 777 freighter. This strategic move is intended to help the airline capture a targeted 40% of the air cargo market. The decision to acquire the 777F comes after the airline discontinued a previous capacity agreement involving a Boeing 747-400 freighter. This earlier arrangement became financially unviable due to a sharp increase in fuel costs experienced earlier in the year.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signals potential new capacity and routing options for air cargo to and from East Africa. Increased competition or expanded services from Kenya Airways could lead to more stable or potentially lower rates on specific lanes, as well as improved schedule reliability. Forwarders should monitor the operationalization of this new freighter to assess its impact on available capacity and transit times, particularly for shipments requiring wide-body aircraft capabilities.
