EnerPure, a company based in Calgary, has successfully secured $35 million in funding to advance its technology for converting used motor oils into low-sulfur marine fuels. The investment comprises $20 million from Canada Growth Fund Inc. (CGF) and $15 million from US-based Rice Investment Group (RIG). This capital injection is specifically earmarked for the construction of EnerPure's inaugural commercial recycling facility, which will be located in Alberta, Canada. The company anticipates that this new production site will become operational by 2028.
This development is significant for freight forwarders and shippers as it signals a potential increase in the availability of sustainable, low-sulfur bunker fuels in the future. As the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to decarbonize and comply with stricter emissions regulations, the emergence of alternative fuel sources derived from waste products can contribute to a more diverse and environmentally friendly bunkering landscape. While the facility's impact on immediate rates or capacity is minimal due to its 2028 operational target, it represents a long-term step towards more sustainable shipping operations and compliance with future environmental standards.
