Air India has successfully rolled out a new cargo transshipment framework, which received approval from India's Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). This Proof of Concept (PoC) was implemented on the Chennai–Delhi–Frankfurt route. The core benefit of this new system is that eligible cargo can remain securely packed within the same Unit Load Device (ULD) during transit. This eliminates the need for piece-level re-screening, a process that traditionally added significant delays.
Previously, cargo transiting through Delhi could experience connection times ranging from 36 to 48 hours. With the new framework, these times have been drastically reduced to just 5 to 8 hours. This substantial improvement in operational efficiency has had a direct impact on cargo volumes. Between June 20 and August 20, 2026, the volume of cargo moved along this corridor more than doubled, increasing from 2.2 metric tons to 4.5 metric tons.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development means significantly faster transit times for air cargo moving through Delhi, particularly on the specified Chennai-Frankfurt route. The elimination of re-screening reduces handling risks and potential for damage, while the shorter connection times improve schedule reliability and allow for tighter supply chain planning. This could make Delhi a more attractive hub for air cargo transshipment, potentially influencing routing decisions and offering competitive advantages for shipments to and from India.
