The joint venture formed by SBM Offshore and Technip Energies (STS JV), in partnership with TotalEnergies EP Suriname, has announced a collaboration with French company Beyond the Sea. Their objective is to evaluate the feasibility of using a wind-assisted kite traction system for towing the GranMorgu Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. The primary goal is to achieve significant reductions in both the duration of the tow and the associated fuel consumption as the FPSO transits from its construction site in China to its operational location in Suriname. This project will specifically utilize Beyond the Sea's SeaKite 2400 system.
This initiative serves a dual purpose: not only to optimize the specific GranMorgu FPSO tow, but also to establish a critical use case for validating this wind-assisted technology's effectiveness on large-scale vessels. For freight forwarders and logistics professionals involved in project cargo and heavy-lift operations, this development signals a growing trend towards sustainable and fuel-efficient towing solutions for oversized modules. If successful, such technologies could influence future project logistics planning, potentially offering more predictable transit times and reduced operational costs through lower bunker consumption, although the direct impact on day-to-day container or general cargo rates is minimal. It highlights an industry shift towards greener practices, which may eventually lead to new requirements or incentives for eco-friendly transport in project logistics.
