DP World, a global logistics provider, is partnering with container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd to reduce its carbon footprint in ocean freight operations within the Americas. Under a book-and-claim system, DP World will purchase shipping services from Hapag-Lloyd that are linked to the use of biofuel, specifically used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME). This arrangement is projected to result in a reduction of approximately 4,700 metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions on a well-to-wake basis.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this initiative highlights the growing trend of shippers demanding verifiable emissions reductions from their logistics partners. While the book-and-claim model allows for flexibility in allocating emissions benefits, it underscores the importance of carriers offering sustainable fuel options. Forwarders should be aware of such programs as they can be a selling point for environmentally conscious clients and may influence carrier selection for specific routes or contracts, potentially impacting pricing for 'green' services.
