Steel rebar futures in China have seen a rebound, settling at approximately CNY 3,090 per ton after experiencing previous losses. This upward movement is primarily driven by an increase in iron ore prices and a more optimistic outlook for the Chinese steel sector, even though overall demand remains subdued. Market confidence has been bolstered by consistent crude steel production, which reached an average of 2.79 million tons per day in June, marking its highest level since March. Strong iron ore imports further supported this trend.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this situation suggests potential stability in demand for dry bulk shipping, particularly for iron ore imports into China. While steel product demand remains soft, the sustained high production levels indicate a continued need for raw material imports. This could prevent significant drops in dry bulk freight rates, though a strong upward trend is unlikely without a substantial increase in finished steel consumption. Forwarders should monitor iron ore prices and Chinese industrial output for indicators of future shipping volume and rate stability in the dry bulk segment.
