Samskip has announced its involvement in the HyShip project, an EU-funded initiative focused on developing a scalable liquid hydrogen supply chain and bunkering infrastructure for zero-emission maritime transport across Europe. The company's Head of Newbuilding & Projects, Jeroen Hollebrands, stated that Samskip hopes this collaboration will significantly contribute to the operational knowledge required for widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered shipping.
The HyShip project's primary goal is to demonstrate the viability of liquid hydrogen as a marine fuel. Samskip will support this by deploying two hydrogen-powered SeaShuttle vessels, currently under construction, as demonstration ships. These vessels are intended to operate on routes between Rotterdam and other European destinations, showcasing the practical application of the technology.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this project signifies a potential shift towards more sustainable shipping options. The successful development of a liquid hydrogen supply chain and bunkering network could introduce new green corridors and reduce the carbon footprint of maritime freight. While immediate impacts on rates or capacity are unlikely during the developmental phase, the long-term outlook suggests increased availability of zero-emission services, which may influence routing decisions and compliance with future environmental regulations.
