The market for multipurpose vessels (MPVs) is experiencing a complex dynamic: while there's a temporary reduction in general breakbulk cargo volumes, the underlying demand for project cargo remains robust. This strong project cargo segment is projected to quickly absorb any excess MPV capacity that might emerge from the breakbulk slowdown, particularly in July. Consequently, shippers might find that any current easing in capacity is short-lived.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this situation implies that while securing MPV space might seem easier in the immediate term due to lower breakbulk activity, this window of opportunity could close rapidly. The sustained strength in project cargo means that rates for specialized and oversized shipments are likely to remain firm or even increase as capacity tightens. Forwarders should advise clients with project cargo to book well in advance and monitor market developments closely, as last-minute bookings could become challenging and more expensive. Capacity for out-of-gauge and heavy-lift shipments will remain constrained.
