Mercedes-Benz Trucks has delivered three second-generation, fully electric eActros 400 tractor units to AVG Köln, a waste disposal company based in Cologne, Germany. These vehicles are specifically designed for municipal waste transport, functioning as tipper trucks. A notable feature of these eActros units is their factory-installed mechanical Power Take-Off (mPTO), a first for Mercedes-Benz electric trucks. This mPTO system enables the direct operation of hydraulic attachments, such as those found on tipper trailers, without requiring a separate electric motor.
This delivery represents a practical application of electric heavy-duty vehicles in a demanding vocational setting. The integration of a mechanical PTO is crucial for tasks that rely on hydraulic power, expanding the utility of electric trucks beyond standard haulage. For freight forwarders and logistics managers, this signifies a growing trend towards the electrification of specialized transport segments, potentially impacting fleet composition and operational planning for urban and regional deliveries.
The introduction of electric trucks with mPTO capabilities could lead to increased efficiency and reduced emissions in waste management and similar industries. It also highlights the ongoing innovation in electric vehicle technology, making these trucks more versatile for various applications. As more electric heavy-duty options become available, forwarders may need to assess the total cost of ownership, charging infrastructure requirements, and operational benefits for their specific transport needs.
