Istanbul-based IDEA Logistics recently managed the transportation of a 160-tonne gas turbine and its accompanying components from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to a project location in Türkiye. The primary turbine, measuring 21 meters in length, 4.5 meters in width, and 5.35 meters in height, necessitated specialized handling due to its substantial dimensions and weight. It was moved using a hydraulic multi-axle trailer, a common method for oversized cargo.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this project highlights the complexities and specialized equipment required for heavy-lift and oversized cargo movements. Such operations demand meticulous planning, route surveys, and coordination across multiple transport modes, often involving permits for road transport and specialized vessels for sea legs. The use of shipper-owned containers (SOCs) for accessories also indicates a tailored approach to equipment management, which can offer flexibility but requires careful tracking.
This type of project cargo movement underscores the importance of experienced logistics providers in managing high-value, critical equipment for industrial and energy sector developments. The successful execution ensures timely delivery for large-scale infrastructure projects.
