A collaborative study by FreightWaves and Kooner Fleet Management Solutions indicates a substantial increase in fleet maintenance expenditures. The research, based on a survey of fleet professionals, points to a critical lack of visibility as a primary factor preventing effective cost control. Despite acknowledging the potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) tools for maintenance management, a significant majority—over 80%—of fleets have yet to integrate these technologies into their operations.
This situation creates a challenge for freight forwarders and operations managers, as unpredictable maintenance costs can impact overall operational efficiency and profitability. Without clear insights into maintenance drivers, it becomes difficult to forecast expenses accurately, leading to potential budget overruns and disruptions in service. For forwarders, this could translate to less reliable trucking capacity or higher drayage costs if carriers pass on increased operational expenses.
The findings suggest that while the industry recognizes the value of advanced analytics and AI for optimizing fleet performance and reducing downtime, the adoption rate remains low. Addressing this visibility gap could enable fleets to identify cost drivers, implement preventative measures, and ultimately improve the reliability and cost-effectiveness of their road transport operations.
