Swedish marine technology firm Berg Propulsion has been awarded a contract to deliver propulsion systems for six new 7,000-dwt multi-purpose dry cargo vessels. The ships are currently under construction at Jiangsu Dajin Heavy Industry in China for Carisbrooke Shipping, a UK shipowner and operator. This order highlights continued investment in modernizing and expanding the global fleet for general cargo and breakbulk operations.
For freight forwarders, this development signifies a future increase in available tonnage for project cargo and other non-containerized shipments. New vessels typically offer improved fuel efficiency and reliability, which can indirectly contribute to more stable schedules and potentially lower operational costs for carriers, influencing freight rates in the long term. The addition of these multi-purpose vessels will enhance capacity for specialized cargo movements, offering more options for shippers dealing with oversized or heavy-lift items that do not fit standard containers.
