Prices for US Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles (DDGS) have experienced a notable decline since the beginning of June. This downward pressure is primarily attributed to a combination of factors: weak demand from international markets, an increase in the availability of supply, and a typical seasonal reduction in consumption of animal feed.
Specifically, Platts CIF New Orleans DDGS prices have dropped by $24 per short ton, while Chicago truck prices have seen a similar reduction of $25 per short ton since the start of the month. This widespread price reduction indicates a market oversupply relative to current demand.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development suggests potentially lower shipping volumes for DDGS exports from the US, particularly from Gulf Coast ports like New Orleans. Reduced demand could lead to more competitive ocean freight rates for bulk or containerized shipments of this commodity. Forwarders should monitor inventory levels and export forecasts, as sustained weak demand might impact vessel utilization and routing decisions for agricultural products.
