Italian cabling specialist Prysmian has finalized a framework agreement with IPTO, the Greek electricity grid operator, valued at around $1.03 billion. This significant contract is dedicated to establishing crucial electrical interconnections for the Dodecanese and North Aegean island groups in Greece. The initiative is designed to bolster the energy infrastructure across these islands, thereby improving the reliability of power supply and contributing positively to the national economy.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this project signifies substantial demand for specialized logistics services, particularly in the breakbulk and project cargo sectors. The installation of undersea cables and associated infrastructure will require careful planning for oversized and heavy-lift components, including cable reels, subsea equipment, and potentially land-based transformer stations. This will likely involve dedicated vessel charters, specialized road transport for inland legs, and complex port logistics for handling and staging equipment. Forwarders should anticipate opportunities in managing complex supply chains for high-value, time-sensitive components, requiring expertise in customs clearance, route surveys, and multimodal coordination.
