Norwegian Greentech has announced it has secured several contracts to provide a total of ten ballast water treatment systems (BWTS). These systems will be delivered to various undisclosed shipyards and shipowners located in Norway, Spain, and the Netherlands. The majority of these BWTS units are designated for installation on newbuild vessels. This includes specialized ships such as cable-laying vessels, dive support vessels, offshore support vessels, and live fish carriers.
This development underscores the continued industry focus on environmental compliance, particularly regarding the IMO's Ballast Water Management Convention. The convention mandates that vessels manage their ballast water to prevent the transfer of invasive aquatic species, requiring the installation of approved treatment systems.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this news indicates sustained activity in the shipbuilding sector, particularly for specialized vessels. While not directly impacting container rates or capacity, it reflects ongoing capital expenditure in the maritime industry for environmental upgrades and new vessel construction. This investment in specialized fleets can indirectly support project cargo movements and offshore energy logistics, areas where forwarders often handle complex, high-value shipments.
