MISC Group, in partnership with Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. (K LINE), has finalized a second long-term Time Charter Party (TCP) with Northern Lights JV DA. This agreement, signed on May 29, 2026, involves an additional newbuild Liquefied Carbon Dioxide (LCO₂) carrier. The vessel is intended to bolster the transport and storage capabilities of Europe's initial open-access carbon capture and storage (CCS) network.
This development signifies a continued commitment to decarbonization efforts within the shipping industry and broader European energy sector. The Northern Lights project is a pioneering initiative focused on developing infrastructure for the safe and permanent storage of CO₂ from industrial emitters.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this expansion in LCO₂ shipping capacity is a positive indicator of growing infrastructure for carbon capture and storage. While not directly impacting general cargo rates or capacity, it highlights the increasing focus on sustainable logistics solutions and the emergence of specialized vessel types for environmental projects. Forwarders involved in industrial projects or those with clients focused on reducing their carbon footprint may see opportunities in related supply chains as CCS infrastructure matures.
The new carrier will contribute to scaling up the Northern Lights project, facilitating the transport of captured CO₂ from various industrial sources to offshore storage sites.
