Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha ("K" Line), in collaboration with Malaysia's MISC Berhad, has finalized a time charter agreement with Northern Lights JV DA for a newly constructed liquefied CO2 carrier. The vessel, boasting a capacity of 12,000 cubic meters, will be built by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Co., Ltd. This contract underscores the increasing investment in infrastructure for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).
This development is part of a broader industry trend towards decarbonization, where the safe and efficient transport of captured CO2 is becoming crucial. Northern Lights is a pioneering project focused on developing an open-source CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, aiming to offer a service to industrial emitters across Europe.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this signifies the emergence of a specialized shipping segment for CO2 transport. While direct impact on general cargo rates is minimal, it highlights a growing demand for expertise in handling complex, environmentally sensitive projects. Forwarders with capabilities in project cargo and specialized vessel charters may find new opportunities in supporting the construction and operation of CCUS facilities, including the movement of components for capture plants and pipelines. It also points to the increasing importance of green logistics solutions in the maritime sector.
The vessel's construction and subsequent operation will contribute to the expansion of the global CCUS value chain, supporting industrial efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
