Global crude steel production for May 2026 registered a slight decline, with 70 reporting countries producing a combined 157.9 million tonnes. This figure represents a 0.3% decrease compared to May 2025. Regional data indicates varied performance, with Africa experiencing a significant 10.3% increase in output, reaching 2.1 million tonnes. Conversely, Asia and Oceania, which accounts for the vast majority of global production, saw its output fall by 0.9% to 116.2 million tonnes.
For freight forwarders and shippers, a marginal decrease in global crude steel production suggests a stable but slightly softened demand for iron ore, coking coal, and other raw materials transported via dry bulk vessels. This could lead to minor adjustments in dry bulk freight rates or vessel availability, although the impact is likely to be minimal given the small percentage change. Forwarders handling project cargo or breakbulk shipments for steel-intensive industries should monitor these trends for any potential long-term shifts in demand for finished steel products.
