ClassNK, a classification society headquartered in Tokyo, has been granted authorization by France's Directorate General for Maritime Affairs, Fisheries and Aquaculture. This approval permits ClassNK to carry out statutory surveys and issue necessary certificates for vessels operating under the French flag. The scope of this authority covers compliance with key international maritime conventions, including the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), and the International Convention on Load Lines.
This development signifies an expansion of ClassNK's global reach, as the organization now holds similar delegated authority from more than 100 countries and regions worldwide. This includes numerous European nations, underscoring its role in ensuring international maritime safety and environmental standards.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this means that French-flagged vessels, which are part of the global shipping fleet, will now undergo surveys and certification by ClassNK. This ensures that these vessels meet international safety and environmental standards, contributing to overall schedule reliability and reducing potential delays related to port state control inspections. It indirectly supports the smooth operation of supply chains involving French-flagged tonnage.
