Global air cargo spot rates experienced another increase in May, marking a significant 41% rise compared to the previous year. This follows a peak in April when rates reached their highest point in three years, as reported by industry analyst Xeneta. Despite the recent surge, there are indications that airfreight rates may begin to ease, with this trend anticipated to continue over the next few weeks.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this data suggests a dynamic pricing environment. While May saw elevated costs for air cargo, the forecast for June indicates a potential downward adjustment in spot rates. This could offer some relief for shippers and forwarders, allowing for more favorable pricing negotiations on immediate shipments. However, capacity management and route selection will remain critical as the market adjusts.
