Dutch company Future Proof Shipping (FPS), which specialized in converting inland container barges to operate on hydrogen fuel, has declared bankruptcy. The Central Netherlands Court received the case on June 3rd, leading to the appointment of Linde van Dieren as the bankruptcy trustee.
Established in 2016, FPS gained recognition for its innovative approach to decarbonizing inland waterways. The company's fleet included the H2 Barge 1 (formerly FPS Maas) and H2 Barge 2 (formerly FPS Waal), both of which were successfully retrofitted to utilize hydrogen as their primary fuel source. FPS had a supply agreement in place with Air Liquide for hydrogen provision, and these vessels were operational on a specific route.
For freight forwarders and logistics managers, this news highlights the challenges and risks associated with early-stage green technology adoption in shipping. While the immediate impact on overall inland capacity is likely minimal, as FPS operated a small, specialized fleet, it underscores the financial hurdles faced by companies attempting to scale sustainable solutions. This bankruptcy could lead to a temporary setback in the broader adoption of hydrogen as a marine fuel, particularly for inland navigation, potentially influencing future investment and policy decisions regarding alternative fuels.
