Exmar, a Belgian company, has announced the delivery of the MGC Antwerpen, marking a significant milestone as the world's first ocean-going vessel to be powered by a dual-fuel ammonia engine. This mid-size gas carrier, with a capacity of 46,000 cubic meters, can transport either ammonia or LPG. The vessel's propulsion system, developed in partnership with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, WinGD, Nord Gas Solutions, and Lloyd’s Register, is designed to achieve near-zero emissions when operating on low-carbon ammonia fuel.
This achievement represents a tangible step forward in maritime decarbonization efforts, moving ammonia propulsion from theoretical discussions to practical deployment. For freight forwarders and shippers, the introduction of such vessels signifies a growing trend towards more sustainable shipping options. While the immediate impact on rates and capacity may be limited, it indicates future shifts in vessel technology and potential regulatory advantages for greener fleets. As more ammonia-powered vessels enter service, it could influence carrier selection and supply chain strategies for environmentally conscious cargo owners, potentially leading to premium services for low-emission transport.
Exmar's CEO, Carl-Antoine Saverys, emphasized the importance of execution over debate in driving change within the industry. This delivery underscores the maritime sector's commitment to exploring and implementing alternative fuels to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and reduce its carbon footprint.
