Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Japan Airlines (JAL) have announced a collaboration with Lloyd's Register to facilitate the development and commercialization of the Seaglider vessel, created by REGENT Craft Inc. These innovative vehicles are described as fully electric, next-generation crafts that merge characteristics of both maritime vessels and aircraft. Classified as wing-in-ground (WIG) crafts, Seagliders operate by flying a few meters above the sea surface, utilizing the aerodynamic principle known as ground effect, and can achieve speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, while Seagliders are initially focused on passenger transport, their potential future application in high-speed, short-distance cargo logistics could be significant. This technology could offer new options for time-sensitive cargo routes, potentially bridging the gap between traditional sea and air freight for specific niches. The development of such high-speed, electric vessels also aligns with broader industry trends towards decarbonization and could influence future port infrastructure and intermodal connections if commercialized for cargo.
