The European Commission (EC) has adopted its inaugural dedicated strategies for EU islands and coastal communities. These initiatives aim to establish a unified European approach to foster the long-term potential and resilience of these regions. The strategies are designed to confront common obstacles faced by most EU islands, including elevated transportation expenses, extended travel times, limited and fragmented markets, and an over-reliance on fossil fuels.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, these strategies could signal future investments in infrastructure and connectivity for EU island and coastal regions. This might lead to improved transport links, potentially reducing transit times and costs for shipments to and from these areas. A focus on reducing fossil fuel dependency could also drive demand for greener shipping solutions and alternative fuels, influencing carrier choices and operational planning in the long term.
