Classification society DNV has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for their new independent Type B cargo tank design. This specific design is intended for use in Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) and has a capacity of 90,000 cubic meters for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
This approval signifies that HHI's design meets DNV's stringent safety and technical standards for gas containment systems. The independent Type B tank design offers enhanced structural integrity and cargo safety, which are critical factors in the transportation of volatile substances like LPG.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the development of advanced tank designs like this contributes to safer and potentially more efficient global LPG logistics. While not directly impacting immediate rates or capacity, such innovations can lead to more reliable vessel operations and reduced risk of incidents, which indirectly benefits the entire supply chain. It also indicates ongoing investment in specialized vessel technology, supporting the long-term viability of gas shipping.
This approval is a step towards the potential construction of VLGCs incorporating this new tank design, which could eventually enter service in the global gas shipping fleet.
