DNV has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for their new 1,400 TEU container vessel design, which incorporates a dual-fuel system capable of running on LPG. This certification signifies that the design meets DNV's rigorous safety and technical standards for alternative fuel use in maritime transport.
This approval is part of a broader industry trend towards adopting cleaner marine fuels to comply with increasingly strict environmental regulations and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. LPG, as a marine fuel, offers advantages such as lower carbon emissions compared to traditional heavy fuel oil, and it is becoming a more viable option for certain vessel types.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the introduction of more LPG dual-fuel vessels could contribute to a greener supply chain, potentially influencing carrier selection based on sustainability credentials. While immediate rate impacts are unlikely, the long-term trend towards alternative fuels may lead to differentiated pricing or surcharges for greener shipping options. Increased adoption of such vessels could also contribute to greater schedule reliability by reducing exposure to future carbon taxes or operational restrictions on less environmentally friendly ships.
This AiP paves the way for HHI to potentially build these vessels, contributing to the growing fleet of ships capable of operating on alternative fuels. The move aligns with global efforts to decarbonize the shipping sector, suggesting a future where more diverse fuel options will be available for maritime transport.
