Contargo North France has initiated operations with its first two electric heavy-duty trucks in France. This launch was accompanied by the official opening of a dedicated charging station at the container terminal in Bruay-sur-l’Escaut. The facility, inaugurated by Ports de l’Escaut in collaboration with Contargo and various government and industry representatives on June 8, features two charging points specifically designed for electric heavy-duty vehicles.
This move by Contargo aligns with broader industry efforts to reduce carbon emissions from logistics operations, particularly in the inland transport sector. The introduction of electric trucks and supporting infrastructure is crucial for transitioning away from fossil fuels in road freight.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this signifies a growing trend towards sustainable inland transport options in Europe. While the initial impact on overall capacity or rates may be limited due to the small fleet size, it indicates future shifts in supply chain requirements and potential for 'green' logistics services. Forwarders may need to consider the availability of such eco-friendly options when planning routes and selecting carriers, especially for clients with stringent sustainability goals. The development of charging infrastructure at terminals is a positive step for wider adoption.
Contargo's continued investment in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure suggests a commitment to expanding its zero-emission fleet, potentially leading to more widespread availability of electric road transport services in the region in the future.
