US-based freighter operator Western Global has brought one of its MD-11F cargo aircraft, registration N781SN, back into operational service. This aircraft had been grounded along with other MD-11 freighters in the fleet after a fatal crash involving a UPS MD-11F on November 4 of the previous year.
The return to service was marked by a flight on May 21, lasting just over two hours, between Fort Myers and Columbus. The grounding of the MD-11F fleet was a precautionary measure following the incident, allowing for safety assessments and potential operational adjustments.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the return of this aircraft signifies a slight increase in available air cargo capacity, particularly for specialized or charter operations that Western Global typically handles. While a single aircraft may not drastically alter overall market capacity, it contributes to the fleet's operational flexibility and ability to meet demand for specific routes or urgent shipments. This could potentially offer more options for air cargo movements, especially for out-of-gauge or heavy-lift items that MD-11Fs are well-suited to carry.
