The Palau Ship Registry has formally addressed recent reports incorrectly identifying the M/T JAMES II (IMO 9253909) as a vessel operating under its flag. In a press statement, the registry clarified that the vessel's registration under the Palau flag ceased to be valid on May 9, 2026. Concurrently, the vessel's classification society, RINA, also withdrew its class.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this information is crucial for due diligence. Operating a vessel without valid registration or class can have significant implications for insurance, port entry, and international compliance. Shippers and forwarders booking cargo on such vessels could face delays, legal issues, or even cargo abandonment if the vessel is detained or deemed unseaworthy. It underscores the importance of verifying vessel documentation and status, especially when dealing with non-mainstream carriers or older tonnage.
